Care Discover Insurance: Cover, Premiums and How to Apply

Care Discover is a travel health and personal liability insurance from Care Concept, the German insurer. It covers stays of 10 days to 3 years in any country except the USA, starting from €1.39 per day.

It suits students, working holiday makers, au pairs, long-term travellers and business stays, including trips across several countries. Because the premium is low, it is a popular choice for working holidays in Canada and Australia.

Things to know before you apply

Countries covered

Every country in the world except the USA.

Visa requirements

Whether Care Discover meets the insurance requirements for your visa depends on the country and type of visa. Please check with the immigration authority of your destination before you apply.

Taiwan, for example, accepts Care Discover for tourist visas of up to 3 months, but not for working holiday visas.

Cover in your home country

  • Policies of 11 months or less: no cover in your home country
  • Policies of 12 months or more: cover for up to 6 weeks per year

If you have lived in a country for 5 years or more, that country counts as your home country, even if you are not a citizen.

Report trips to your home country in advance

If your policy runs for 1 year or more and you travel to your home country, you must register the trip in advance through Care Concept’s online service portal. If you do not, only 50% of your medical costs will be reimbursed.

Waiting period

A waiting period of 31 days applies if both of the following are true:

  • you take out the policy on or after your 32nd day in the destination country, and
  • you cannot prove continuous health insurance up to that point.

During the waiting period you pay the premium, but you are not covered. If you apply before you travel, or can show that you are applying within 31 days of arrival, there is no waiting period.

  • Accidents: no waiting period
  • Dental inlays: 8 months
  • Childbirth: 8 months

Cancellation

To cancel, notify Care Concept at least 3 months in advance by email, fax or post. Policies of 3 months or less cannot be cancelled early.

If your trip does not go ahead, for example because your visa is refused, you can cancel before the start date. Care Concept may ask for an official document showing that you cannot travel.

Receiving claim payments in euros

Care Concept pays claims in euros. If your bank account is in another currency, international transfer fees can be high. A free Wise account gives you a euro account number (IBAN). Give this IBAN to Care Concept when you make a claim.

How to apply

Apply on Care Concept’s official application page. The form is in English.
